Vitamin B2 and Thyroid Function
If you have been reading about thyroid related health issues, you have probably come across articles talking about B12 deficiencies. What I'm wondering, though, is whether you know about Vitamin B2? Riboflavin (B2) can have many benefits, and it's worth finding out if it can help you. Why should thyroid sufferers care about B2? B2 is required for thyroid enzyme regulation and the production of corticosteriods. Without B2, production of T4 is suppressed and adrenal glands fail to secrete their hormones. A B2 deficiency can contribute to an under active thyroid and ultimately lead to weight gain and other health issues. If you search for symptoms of B2 deficiency, among the symptoms on the list is diminished thyroid function. B2 is all … [Read more...]
Autism and Congenital Hypothyroidism: Why Newborn Screening Matters
Although Newborn Screening Awareness month has passed, it is and will always be something that I will talk about on my blog. The key to saving children with congenital hypothyroidism is newborn screening. I am honored to share a personal story from Jessica Wade, a friend and fellow blogger, who I met through the MAGIC Foundation's private group for parents of children with congenital hypothyroidism. Her story is one of pain and heartbreak but also of hope and change. Jessica and I share a desire for more research, better screening standards and overall improved care of children with congenital hypothyroidism. You will learn from and be inspired by her story. Why is newborn screening for Congenital Hypothyroidism so important? Getting … [Read more...]
Growth Awareness Week: Why it Matters to Me.
Is Your Child Growing Normally? That's the question The MAGIC Foundation is asking. Today, they launched Growth Awareness Week aka Growth Spurt in an effort to raise awareness of growth related disorders affecting children around the world. This year, they expect to reach over 70 different countries and over 1 million parents. They email, text message, post to Facebook, Tweet, share videos, spread handouts, and post fliers, all to tell people... "Growth is a major factor in a child's overall health". WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT GROWTH AWARENESS: Measuring & plotting a child on a growth chart is one of the least expensive, most non-invasive forms of preventative medical care available. Normal children grow 2 to 2 1/2 inches … [Read more...]
Growth Awareness Week
On the eve of The MAGIC Foundation's Growth Awareness Campaign, I am excited to share with you this special message from one of their Co-Founders, Teresa Tucker. The MAGIC Foundation created our Growth Spurt three years ago to promote awareness of growth disorders in children. We did not realize that it would launch into the world wide campaign of 2014 and a proclamation from the US Senate, declaring the third week of September "Growth Awareness Week". This year, we expect to reach over 70 different countries and over 1 million parents. We email, text message, post to Facebook, Tweet, share videos, spread handouts, and post fliers, all to tell people... "Growth is a major factor in a child's overall health". What you should … [Read more...]
Congenital Hypothyroidism and Thyroid Resistance: A Story About Heart
One of the amazing things about volunteering with MAGIC Foundation and about starting this blog is all of the amazing parents I have met. I am very excited to introduce you to my friend, Julie Lopez. She has very openly and honestly written this guest blog post for Thyroid Mom so that you can learn more about congenital hypothyroidism and about thyroid resistance. It's so important to understand that not everyone's journey with congenital hypothyroidism is the same. We can all learn from each other. Thank you, Julie, from the bottom of my heart for sharing your story about David's journey.~Blythe aka Thyroid Mom My son, David, was 5 days old, and we showed up at his scheduled newborn checkup. The pediatrician our daughter usually saw … [Read more...]
Thyroid Imbalance: A Yin-Yang Perspective
I am pleased to introduce you to my acupuncturist, Ginna Browning. Ginna has been helpful in treating many issues for me, beginning with sciatic nerve pain when I was pregnant with my oldest son. The information she is sharing as today's Guest Blogger will hopefully help you understand more about thyroid imbalance and help you see the value of incorporating a holistic or balanced approach to treating hypothyroidism (under active thyroid). Happy Reading! ~Blythe aka Thyroid Mom ******************************************************************* In traditional Chinese medicine, thyroid disorders are treated depending on the patient’s symptoms and presenting diagnosis pattern. Low thyroid function often presents as a “Spleen and Kidney … [Read more...]
Battling Those Winter Blues
Yes, that's me, Grinchified. Where I live, the winters aren’t awful, but usually still cold and often rainy. It’s just not cold enough to snow, so no fun sledding or building snowmen. The holidays are filled with fun times with friends and family, and then I blink and it’s back to the regular days. I often find myself feeling like the Grinch around this time of year. If you struggle with the same thing, here are some tips on brightening your spirits this winter: 1) Get some sunshine each morning. If you wake up to a sunny morning, try to get in a walk before breakfast or sit in a sunny spot in your house to eat breakfast. If those aren’t good options for you, consider purchasing a light box (available from online retailers like … [Read more...]
Hair
That’s me - with mighty big hair. As you can tell, I have red hair, well it’s really more strawberry blonde, but I’ve been classified as a redhead. I have the fair skin and freckles to go with it. As a child, I was often picked on and teased because of the color of my hair. I was called “coppertop”, “Clifford, the Big Red Dog” (yes, I have the unfortunate combination of having red hair and Clifford as my last name) and told “I’d rather be dead than red on the head”. Even as a teenager, I would hear things like “no offense, but I’d hate to have hair like that” – mostly centered around the fact that I didn’t tan like everyone else and my friends feeling sorry for me and my perpetual need for sunscreen. I was constantly counseled on what … [Read more...]
