Autism and Congenital Hypothyroidism: Why Newborn Screening Matters

October 6, 2014 by Blythe 4 Comments

Although Newborn Screening Awareness month has passed, it is and will always be something that I will talk about on my blog.  The key to saving children with congenital hypothyroidism is newborn screening.  I am honored to share a personal story from Jessica Wade, a friend and fellow blogger, who I met through the MAGIC Foundation's private group for parents of children with congenital hypothyroidism.  Her story is one of pain and heartbreak but also of hope and change.  Jessica and I share a desire for more research, better screening standards and overall improved care of children with congenital hypothyroidism.  You will learn from and be inspired by her story. Why is newborn screening for Congenital Hypothyroidism so important? Getting … [Read more...]

The Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act of 2013 passed the US Senate on January 29, 2014.  It goes to the US House of Representatives next for consideration. Why does this matter?  It matters because newborn screening saves lives.  Newborn screening enables doctors to quickly diagnose and treat otherwise life threatening disorders. If you have a child born in the US or other developed country, they were most likely screened at birth for various health disorders.  If you are like me, and have a child with congenital hypothyroidism, your child was probably diagnosed based on the newborn screen.  Both of my boys were "caught" by their newborn screen - caught and saved. I feel lucky to live in a country where we are … [Read more...]

Newborn Screening

October 27, 2013 by Blythe Leave a Comment

When people find out that my children have congenital hypothyroidism, they often ask me how I found out.  I explain that my children’s newborn screen results revealed that they had very high TSH levels.  People often admit that they didn’t know there was mandatory newborn screening in the US, and that they didn’t know what tests were conducted as part of the newborn screen.  I have to be honest that before my oldest son was diagnosed, I didn’t know about it either.  I recalled that we consented to various tests and that his heel was pricked, but I couldn’t have told you what they were looking for at the time. 2013 marks the 50th year of newborn screening in the US.  Screens are conducted for congenital hypothyroidism (CH) and … [Read more...]
